It’s a lot of whimsy crammed into a five-hour runtime. There’s always something new to see or do, so many playful ideas that are introduced and then tossed aside. Pikuniku for Switch game reviews & Metacritic score: Pikuniku is a puzzle-exploration game that takes place in a strange but playful world where not everything is as happy as it seems. It may be hard to describe, but Pikuniku is a delight. You’re also able to run into, jump off of, or kick around the other player just to mess with them. It’s also utilized in the game’s co-op mode, where two players each control an oval with legs (one red, one orange) and work together to navigate a number of puzzle platforming levels. The only time the physics actually comes to the forefront of gameplay is during a one-on-one basketball-like minigame where you try to kick a ball into a basket while preventing the computer opponent from doing it. It goes on just long enough to be awkwardly funny. As they walk uphill, their legs extend to surprising lengths, or do a stutter step when they stop moving. Explore a land filled with lost legends, ancient powers, and ferocious monsters in TUNIC, an isometric action game about a small fox on a big adventure. It does an especially good job at animating the beast’s legs, producing some delightful and silly effects. Pikuniku is an absurdly wonderful puzzle-exploration game that takes place in a strange but playful world where not everything is as happy as it seems. Instead, it’s used for things that just feel fun to do: kicking rocks down hills, or knocking villagers off ledges. The game never takes full advantage of the physics engine for any of the actual platforming or puzzle-solving in the game’s single player. The real star is the physics engine, which creates an inherent silliness and chaos that attempting to simulate things accurately can bring. Both of these are necessary skills, allowing you to roll around as an oval or kick rocks and other things around. They don’t really have a name, but everyone living in the village outside their cave fears them, calling them “the beast.” As the beast you’re able to run and jump around like you might expect, but you’re also able to kick and tuck your legs in to just be an oval. It’s a happy, fun little game that needs to be enjoyed by everyone who owns a Switch, and the world is a better place with games like this in it.ĭevolver Digital provided us with a Pikuniku Switch code for review purposes. In Pikuniku you control what looks like a red oval with legs. In fact, nothing about Pikuniku bothers me. It’s also not very long, but as someone who always prefers 3-4 hours of excellent gameplay over 15+ hours with lots of filler, that doesn’t bother me at all. SwitchLib is not affiliated with Nintendo. You can manage your collection and wishlist and share it publicly. None of it is particularly difficult, but that wouldn’t fit in with the game’s overall vibe. Pikuniku is puzzle platformer, that while pretty short and rarely all that challenging, offers plenty of humorous charm and a good mix of challenges and activities to participate in. SwitchLib is aiming to create a library with all the physical releases for the Nintendo Switch for the regions Europe, North America, Japan and Asia. There are also puzzles to solve here and there, some fun boss fights, and, in one memorable spot, a dance battle. For just a red oval with a pair of lanky legs and a pair of dots for eyes, he’s surprisingly expressive as you bounce him around this childlike 2D world, as he’s capable of rolling around and through tight spaces, or using his long legs to kick switches, boxes or other hapless denizens, whether that’s to solve a puzzle or just for, um, kicks. ![]() The colours here are bright, and the visuals jump off the screen, while the oddly-shaped characters you meet are always quick with a joke.Īs for the game itself, it brings together a whole bunch of different elements. Yet, despite that, it approaches its topic with a sunny disposition. ![]() It’s a game about corporate greed and evil robots. You (controlling Piku) are trying to free villagers from the clutches of Sunshine Inc., a villainous corporation stealing water and, uh, corn, and generally just being kind of mean. Pikuniku - Nintendo Switch Digital Code ESRB Rating: Teen by Devolver Digital. The crazy thing is, Pikuniku is set in a dystopia. Pikuniku is an absolutely adorable game from beginning to end, a puzzle-platformer of sorts that draws inspiration from games like LocoRoco and Katamari with its blend of cuteness and absurdity, and that had me smiling from beginning to its all-to-soon end. So, to start, I’ll talk about what I don’t like about the game. ![]() The problem with loving a game as much as I love Pikuniku is that there’s so much good to say about it, it’s hard to know where to begin.
